The University of Pennsylvania recently announced the winners of the 2016 President’s Engagement Prize. Each recipient will receive as much as $100,000 for project implementation expenses and $50,000 for living expenses. The Prizes, first awarded last year, are competitively awarded annually for Penn seniors to design and undertake local, national or global engagement projects during the first year after they graduate. Kriya Patel, C’16, one of this year’s three recipients, will be implementing her project in the Philadelphia region, and shared the impact of Penn’s all-grant financial aid policy in allowing her to pursue her dreams:

Kriya Patel, a senior in the College of Arts & Sciences, will help women about to be released from the all-female Riverside Correctional Facility in Philadelphia apply for and secure health insurance and identification prior to release.  “Looking back at my life at Penn, I am happy that four years ago I chose Penn. I've had many opportunities here that have helped me grow as a person and develop my passions. As a high school senior, Penn was on my list but affordability was a huge issue. The Penn financial aid package made it possible for me to attend Penn. While here I've met some incredible people - friends, professors, and TAs who have greatly influenced me. My project is a direct result of a class I took here which allowed me to go to Riverside Correctional Facility once a week and witness firsthand the prison system and the immense issues facing the women there. This unique class has shaped my future career goals and I am grateful to have had that opportunity. If you have an idea, you are able to pursue it at Penn as there are always avenues open to you.”
