Apply for Financial Aid
Financial Aid Checklist
Graduate Students
2019-2019 Academic Year

In order to be considered for federal and Penn financial aid, you must submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), which requires information from you and your spouse, if applicable. It is important to check the financial aid information for your school of interest because each graduate school at Penn administers its own financial aid, and may require additional documents to determine your eligibility for grant funding. Check with your school for their requirements.

To receive federal and institutional administered funding, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Demonstrate financial need, (except for the Federal Direct Loan and Federal Direct Grad PLUS Loan)

  • Make satisfactory academic progress in your program of study

  • Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident

  • Enroll at least half-time in a degree program

  • Not be in default on a Federal educational loan or owe on a federal grant.

  • For the Federal Direct Grad PLUS Loan program: be determined creditworthy by your lender through a credit check. That is, you cannot have adverse credit history.

Submit to the U.S. Department of Education

Online at
If you filed a FAFSA previously, use your FSA username and password to complete a Renewal FAFSA online.
After you file your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR), which will indicate if you have been selected for verification. If so, Penn will contact you in the future with further instructions.
