Learn about FERPA and how it affects you

Want to access your student’s grades? Review and/or pay your student’s bill? Talk to SRFS about grades, financial aid, or a bill?

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects your student’s privacy and governs disclosure of your student’s academic and financial information. Unless your student completes a consent option, the University generally cannot discuss academic or financial records with a third party, including parents. Have your student visit the ‘SFS Must Do List’ and follow the instructions to designate you, or other parties, under privacy settings.

For more information about FERPA, visit the U.S. Department of Education’s website at
http://www.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa/index.html.

 Penn is on your side

In these current economic times, Penn is committed to assisting our families through financial difficulties that may occur throughout your student's undergraduate career.

Examples of this commitment are:

  • No Loan Policy
The University’s ‘no-loan’ policy for undergraduate aided students means that Penn will not expect dependent students to borrow student loans to meet their academic year financial need, although it is still an available option. (Some students may still choose to borrow for summer sessions, or to cover their work-study job.)

  • Changes in financial circumstances: If your financial situation changes due to unemployment, or a reduction in income, please contact our office.

  • Penn's Payment Options
Consider one of these ways to pay your student's tuition, fees, and other educational expenses:
    • Pay the bill in full. Spring Term bills will be sent in early December and are due early January
    • Lock in current tuition through the Tuition Stabilizer Plan
    • Enroll in Penn’s Monthly Budget Plan. This plan has closed for the 2009/2010 academic year. Enrollment for 2010-2011 will begin in early spring.

  • Lender Lists
Penn has researched lenders to help students and families find the best borrowing options. The lists are available on our website.
